Tips for scanning ID cards/Chip-based ID cards using NFC technology

For quick and convenient biometric authentication on SCB Mobile Banking, SCB would like to provide some tips when scanning ID cards/chip-based ID cards using NFC technology:

1. About NFC technology on ID cards

Scanning chip-based ID cards is a mandatory step when registering for biometric authentication on banking application. Through NFC (short-range wireless communication technology), the banking application will read data from a valid ID card and compare it with biometric data from the Ministry of Public Security to verify the account holder.

2. Preparation before scanning chips on ID cards

- Ensure that the ID card is not obscured, damaged or torn

- Remove the ID card’s case and clean the chip surface

- Remove the phone case and tempered glass in case the glass is too thick

- Turn on NFC feature on the phone

  • iOS operating system: NFC function is always activated (from iPhone 7 or next models)
  • Android operating system: Go to “Settings” >> Search “NFC” >> Turn on NFC feature

3. Instructions on how to scan chips on ID cards using NFC technology

- Step 1: Follow the instructions for biometric authentication. When scanning chip on the ID card, place the chip area at the back (for Android devices)/front (for iOS devices) of the ID cards close to the back of the phone.

- Step 2: Slowly move the ID card to find the NFC reading location until the phone vibrates or the reading progress bar is displayed (focus on the area near the camera, then move to the middle of the phone and finally the bottom edge of the phone)

- Step 3: Keep the phone and ID card steady until the reading process ends

- Step 4: Follow the next steps to complete biometric authentication on banking application

Notes:

  • Keep the ID card and the phone steady during the scanning process: Do not keep the card and phone too far away or move them as this will affect the data reading process.
  • Switch to wifi or 4G/5G if chip scanning on ID card fails.
  • The NFC reader is usually located on the back of the phone, close to the logo or center area. However, the specific location may vary depending on the phone model. Customers can check the manufacturer's website to see location of the reader.
